Kizil Cave 118: Heavenly Musician
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 3rd–4th century |
| This image is painted on the barrel-vaulted ceiling in the main chamber. The heavenly musician plays a pipa and is surrounded by mountains, trees, and birds within a diamond motif. The musician stands in a sinuous posture and the head is turned to one side. The figure wears a jeweled crown and a dhoti, with a flowing stole draped over the body. |
