Mogao Cave 407: Ceiling
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui dynasty (581–618) |
| In the middle of the ceiling is a large lotus flower, at the center of which are three rabbits with pricked ears running in a circle. Eight apsaras fly in orbit around the lotus. Clouds and flowers intertwined with the apsaras’ long stoles form a strong sense of fluidity and movement, and a blue background suggests a scene of the heavens. Bordering the caisson is a triple-layered frame. The first layer has a circular floral pattern, the second has a fish- scale pattern, each scale containing a half lotus flower, and the outermost layer consists of pennants embellished with lotuses. The ceiling is intricate and vibrant with rich colors and patterns. |
