Zhang Shoushan (Active 1522-1620)

CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644)
Zhang Shoushan was a ceramic sculptor whose works were representative of the Dehua Kiln style. He was skilled in sculpting statues of Arhats and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. His porcelain works exemplified characteristics of the Dehua Kiln style and were finely carved with exquisite detail. He finished the pieces with a glaze that artfully reflected the light, casting colors of pink and pearly white. Zhang's extant Arhat Carrying Books statue, which is made of white porcelain, is kept at the Guangdong Provincial Museum in Guangzhou.
