Maitreya Bodhisattva
CHINA; Yuan dynasty (1271–1368); Gilt bronze; H: 69 cm; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia |
| Maitreya sits with legs pendent on a Sumeru throne, the hands are in Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra. A five-leaf crown surrounds hair that builds to a pagoda ornament at its apex. Ribbons flutter from sidepieces and three different sets of necklaces hang over the chest. Stoles wind down the arms to a skirt with a decorated hem. The skirt is overhung with beaded pendants and the tie of a belt. The Bodhisattva’s rectangular throne has fretted legs and rests on a Sumeru base ornamented with lotus petals. The base has a semicircular overhang on which the feet rest. |
