Figurine of Maitreya Bodhisattva

Figurine of Maitreya Bodhisattva

CHINA; Qing dynasty (1644–1911); Crystal; H: 4.4 cm; Hebei Provincial Museum, Shijiazhuang, China
This crystal figurine of Maitreya Bodhisattva is portrayed with a big head, round face, downcast eyes, bulbous nose, and wide mouth. He has strong shoulders, a bare chest, and large belly. He wears a loose-sleeved robe with many folds and carries a sack. Maitreya sits in royal ease position with his left hand on his leg and his right hand on his knee.
This depiction of Maitreya is also associated with Budai, an eccentric monk known to be a manifestation of the Bodhisattva and carries a sack.
