Mogao Caves: Monks
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty to Five Dynasties (618–960); Clay; H: 27.8 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France |
| These figures were discovered in the Mogao Caves and were fired with colors already applied. They are in mid-relief and sit in niches. The one on the left has one foot balanced on the seat and one dangling; the other figure sits with both legs pendent. The former is occupied with his beads, while the one on the right has a sutra scroll unrolled on his lap. The monastic robes are brightly colored and may be folk influenced. |
