Mogao Cave 66: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

| This image is painted on the right side of the back (west) wall niche within the main chamber of Cave 66. Avalokitesvara has a high topknot and wears a crown. Flowing garments, stoles, and beaded ornaments cover the body. The slender Bodhisattva stands in a graceful pose on two lotus pedestals. The legs of the figure are especially long and thin. A canopy is depicted above the Bodhisattva, overlapping with the nimbus due to the limited space within the niche. An inscription on the side reads, “Avalokitesvara, who rescues beings from suffering.” |
