South Xiangtangshan Grottoes: Head of a Bodhisattva
CHINA, Hebei, Handan; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577); Stone; H: 38.1 cm; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA |
| This sculpture of the head of a Bodhisattva was originally from the South Xiangtangshan Grottoes. The figure wears a gemmed headdress. The large eyes gaze downwards beneath prominent bow-shaped eyebrows that continue into the line of the high bridged nose. The lips are calmly composed above the rounded chin. The head is well-proportioned and projects a sense of serenity. |
