Wanfoge Temple Manjusri Hall: Manjusri Bodhisattva

CHINA, Shanxi, Xinzhou; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); Dry lacquer; H: 300 cm
Manjusri Bodhisattva is seated with legs pendent on the lion. One hand is petting the lion 's head as the brightly painted creature turns to look up at the Bodhisattva with mouth agape. The other hand is open in varada (wish-granting) mudra, although this is partly hidden by a cloth. Long blue locks of the Bodhisattva 's hair stream over the shoulders. The monastic robe opens to reveal an under robe that is knotted about the chest.
