Ruiguang Temple Pagoda: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Jiangsu, Suzhou; Song dynasty (960–1279); Clay;H: 38 cm; Suzhou Museum, Jiangsu, China
The two statues Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva were discovered in the heavenly palace on the third story of the Ruiguang Temple Pagoda in 1978. These sculptures are identical in design. The figures wear matching jeweled headdresses and monastic robes. The feet are just visible beneath the skirt. Bead ornaments connected by medallions fall over the arms and loop down the sides of the skirt. The lowered hands are crossed over each other and the right hands hold chanting beads.
