Incense Burner with Lion Lid

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392); Stoneware; H: 21.2 cm; National Museum of Korea, Seoul, South Korea
This celadon incense burner was listed as National Treasure No. 60 in 1962. The bowl of the incense burner is supported by three legs with mythical creature faces. The bowl has a flat bottom and is decorated with cloud patterns, as is the wide rim. A mythical lion sits on the lid and is delicately incised with lines to highlight the muscles and the mane. The incense smoke flows from the bowl and up through the lion's mouth.
