Bagan: Seated Bodhisattva

MYANMAR, Mandalay, Bagan; circa 10th century; Gilt copper alloy; H: 18.5 cm; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, United Kingdom
This statue although discovered in Bagan, has features of the Pyu style and may have been made elsewhere. It depicts a slender Bodhisattva, seated in the royal ease posture with eyes closed, wearing a large intricate headdress with a Buddha image on the front. The upper body is also adorned with various pieces of jewelry including a necklace, armlets, and bracelets, while the Bodhisattva rests the wrist and hands on the knees, in a very relaxed pose. Much of the statue's gilding has worn off.
