CHINA; Qing dynasty (1644-1911); Gilt and color on red cloth; 80 x 53.5 cm; Tibet Museum, Lhasa, Tibet, China
Amitayus Buddha is a manifestation of Amitabha Buddha, and is a symbol of longevity in Tibetan Buddhism. In this image, a larger Amitayus Buddha is in the center holding a vase, surrounded by 144 smaller images of Amitayus, symbolizing the immense power of the Buddha. The thangka is painted in gold on a red base. Such paintings, known as red thangkas, became popular in the 17th century.
