Yonghe Temple: Sixth Panchen Lama

CHINA, Beijing; Qing dynasty (1644–1911); Gilt copper alloy; H: 70 cm
Lobsang Palden Yeshe, the Sixth Panchen Lama, was invited to Beijing in 1778 to celebrate the birthday of Emperor Qianlong (reigned 1736–1795) but died from smallpox during his visit. He was only 42 years old. This 18th century sculpture shows him in monastic attire wearing a ritual hood. The figure sits in full lotus position upon a double lotus pedestal, with the right hand raised in the vitarka (teaching) mudra. The clothing is remarkably detailed and natural-looking.
