Gongxian Cave 5: Ceiling
CHINA, Henan, Zhengzhou; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Stone |
| The ceiling of Cave 5 is different from the ceilings of Caves 1, 3, and 4. A medallion consisting of a large lotus with two layers of petals is in the center, surrounded by six apsaras. Positioned in graceful forms, the apsaras appear to be flying, with stoles trailing behind them, and wisps of cloud below. A relief carving of a lotus and a lotus-born being with joined palms can be found in each of the four corners of the ceiling. |
