Dehua: Statuette of Ascetic Sakyamuni

CHINA, Fujian, Quanzhou; 19th–20th century; Porcelain;H: 23 cm; Quanzhou Municipal Administration Commission of Cultural Heritage, Fujian, China
This Dehua porcelain statuette depicts Sakyamuni Buddha in contemplation during his period of asceticism, before he decided to follow the Middle Way. Appearing very thin, his face has sunken eyes, a long nose, a mustache, and signs of a beard on his pointed chin. His hair is curled and his chest is bare. He sits in royal ease position with one hand on top of the other, resting upon his knee. Despite his apparent emaciation, he has a peaceful countenance.
