Longmen Grotto 1443: Attendant Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Henan, Luoyang; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); H: 3.7 m
On the back (west) wall next to the central Buddha statue, there are two attendant Bodhisattvas with delicate features and gentle smiles, adorned with elaborate crowns and large ornaments. Each Bodhisattva, measuring 3.7 m in height, wears a long, flowing dhoti and a stole across the abdomen. They stand barefoot on a lotus pedestal. The figure on the left holds a petal-shaped jewel, while the one on the right holds a vase. Their three-layered nimbuses are decorated with lotus petals, beaded patterns, apsaras, and flames.
