Taitai 'er Cave 16: Standing Buddhas
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 8th century |
| These standing Buddhas are located on the outer walls of the rear and side corridors. Three Buddha images are painted on each outer wall with a total of nine figures. The Buddhas are surrounded by nimbuses and oval aureoles, both of which are filled with small Buddhas wearing monastic robes that cover both shoulders. In addition, heavenly beings making offerings are found on the upper corners of each standing Buddha. Similar standing Buddhas are found within a niche on the west side of the central pillar. |
