Five-Story Pagoda
CHINA; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Sandstone; H: 58 cm; Dunhuang Museum, Gansu, China |
| The five-story pagoda was found near the Dafo Temple in Dunhuang, Gansu. There are carvings on all four sides and it was made to imitate a wooden and brick pagoda. Only the square base and five tiers of the original model remain. Each tier is surrounded by niches incorporating scenes in relief and between tiers there are tubular tile canopies. The base of the pagoda is engraved with a section from the Ekottara Agama. |
