Mogao Cave 45: Niche Sculptures

| These sculptures of a Buddha, two disciples, two Bodhisattvas, and two Heavenly Kings are located within a niche on the back (west) wall of the main chamber. They date from the High Tang period (712–756). The Buddha has a full face, broad shoulders, and is seated in full lotus position, forming a mudra with the right hand. On the left is Ananda, who has a gentle face and stands with hands folded in front of his abdomen, his body leaning slighty to one side. To the right of the Buddha is Mahakasyapa, who stands upright with his right hand held before the chest. The two Bodhisattvas have round faces and wear ornaments, stoles, and long lower garments. The Heavenly Kings wear armor and step on demons. |
