Seated Buddha

INDONESIA; 12th century; Bronze; H: 16.6 cm; National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan
The Buddha is seated with legs pendent and feet resting on a lotus pedestal. The head is positioned forward and to one side, while the hands are held in a mudra. The figure wears a monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bare, with the fold on the left side brought forward over the shoulder. The stylized studs of the hair culminate in a crest jewel that almost takes the place of the usual usnisa.
The statue, mandorla, and base were cast separately and then assembled. The rectangular base is stepped and decorated with animal heads. The oval mandorla radiates outwards to a flaming rim. The base of the pole that once supported a canopy is at the top.
