Potala Palace: Vajravarahi

CHINA, Tibet, Lhasa; 14th–17th century Copper; H: 31 cm
Vajravarahi is a semi-wrathful wisdom deity and the Vajrayana consort of Cakrasamvara. Here she is depicted with a sow's head and a stocky human body, as she assumes the warrior stance. A red double-petaled nimbus surrounds the head that wears a skull crown and large earrings decorated with crossed thunderbolts. The body is adorned with turquoise studded jewelry and a garland of skulls that wraps around the arms, hanging almost to the ground.
