Mogao Cave 17: Mudras
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Line drawing on paper; 15.4 x 143.5 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom |
| This late 9th century artwork depicts hands forming various mudras with simply drawn ink lines. The 38 mudras are mostly displayed in columns of three, although some columns contain a standing or seated figure, and one column shows four mudras. Simple and clear, it is an effective instructional diagram for teaching practitioners how to form the different hand mudras. |
