Mogao Cave 57: Bodhisattva in Contemplation
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907) |
| This image from the Early Tang period (618–712) is situated on the left beside the inner niche in the back (west) wall of the main chamber. The Bodhisattva wears a necklace, long flowing robes, and an ornate headdress decorated with ribbons that trail down on both sides. Seated on a lotus throne, the figure gazes downward, resting the left elbow on the raised left knee. The graceful posture and contemplative expression of the Bodhisattva make for an elegant image. |
