Sakya Monastery: Sachen Kunga Nyingpo

CHINA, Tibet, Shigatse; 14th–15th century; Copper; H: 13 cm
Sachen Kunga Nyingpo was the First Patriarch of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism. This 14th to 15th century artwork depicts him as a charismatic religious leader with little hair, white eyebrows, silver mustache, a broad forehead, and bright eyes. The monastic robe is incised with flowers. The figure sits in full lotus position with one hand lowered in the varada (wish-granting) mudra and the other hand lifted in a mudra. A series of mantras are carved on the lower rim of the inverted lotus throne.
