Mogao Cave 209: Ceiling

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
Within the square caisson in the center of the truncated pyramidal ceiling of the main chamber of Cave 209, four pomegranates are arranged diagonally with intertwining grapevines to form an interlocking floral pattern. Surrounding the caisson are layers of border patterns, including a circular floral pattern, bead strings, colorful geometric shapes, and overlapping pennants. The relative simplicity of the outer patterns contrasts with the luxuriantly decorated center. The main colors used are red ocher, white, green, and blue.
