Mogao Cave 445: Illustration of the Amitabha Sutra - Heavenly Dancer
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907) |
| This detail is found in the lower central section of the illustration of the Amitabha Sutra on the south wall of the main chamber. The heavenly dancer has a high topknot and a full face with curved eyebrows and round cheeks. The figure wears a necklace, bracelets on the arms and wrists, and a long stole wrapped around the arms. The dancer’s right elbow is bent and the hand is raised to ear level while the left hand is lowered and grasps the stole. A long lower garment is worn, and the figure dances with the left leg raised in a dynamic pose. |
