Toling Monastery: Green Tara

CHINA, Tibet, Ngari; 15th–16th century; Gilt copper alloy; H: 19 cm
This bronze Tara was cast in Tibet during the 15th and 16th centuries. The figure is depicted with a tall topknot encircled by a coronet studded with turquoise. It is similar in style to other pieces of jewelry that adorn her. Tara holds long-stalked lotuses in both hands but her right hand is lowered in what looks like the varada (wish-granting) mudra. Seated in the relaxation posture on a lotus throne, the figure 's right foot is supported on an outgrowth.
