Seated Bodhisattva
Seated Bodhisattva

Seated Bodhisattva

CHINA; Northern Song dynasty (960–1127); Gilt copper alloy; H: 13.5 cm; Shanghai Museum, China
The Bodhisattva is seated on a lotus throne in half lotus position with one hand raised and the other in the lap. An ornate headdress supports a topknot from which ribbons fall to the shoulders. Below the three lines on the neck there is a heavy neck ornament. The Bodhisattva's robe is opened at the front to reveal a knotted inner garment. A wide fold over the left arm hangs down to the less detailed skirt beneath. The petals on the lotus throne alternate in a style popular during the Song dynasty (960–1279).
