Longmen Grotto 1034: Life of the Buddha - Parinirvana

| This image is located on the left side of the large niche on the north wall. Sakyamuni Buddha reclines on a raised platform, with the head slightly inclined. The legs rest one atop the other. At the head of the platform, a monk faces outward and kneels with palms joined as if in prayer. Behind the Buddha is a screen wall behind which four monks are positioned with only their heads visible over the top. The monks appear in mourning: the eyes and mouth of the first are down-turned in an expression of grief; the second opens his mouth as if wailing in anguish; and the third and fourth appear equally devastated. |
