Zhengding: Bodhisattvas in Contemplation

CHINA, Hebei, Shijiazhuang; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577), dated 573; Commissioned by Qingzen; Marble; H: 37.6 cm; Zhengding County Administration Office of Cultural Heritage, Hebei, China
Acquired in Zhengding, these symmetrical figures sit on separate thrones in the relaxation posture. Behind their headdresses, the twin nimbuses intersect. Two disciples with hands joined in reverence stand on either side.
Along the pedestal, a mountain censer is guarded by lions and with figures making offerings beyond them. An inscription on the reverse side of the statue states the monk Qingzen commissioned the sculpture in 573.
