Ajanta Cave 17: Heavenly Beings

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad; circa mid-to-late 5th century
This image of two embracing heavenly beings is painted on the wall of the portico, to the right of the doorway. Much of the painting has flaked off but the female figure remains more or less in complete form. She has an elegant appearance with fine eyebrows and a reddish-brown complexion. She fondly gazes back toward her partner and holds a flower in her hand. Her head is wrapped in a patterned scarf with jewels and pearls. The pearls around her neck appear to sway in the breeze, suggesting movement. The figures are finely outlined in black, and their palms and lower lips are highlighted in white.
