Prayer Beads
THAILAND; 19th century; Glass; L: 42 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom |
It is thought that these glass prayer beads were made in northern Thailand and were collected by Norwegian explorer Carl Bock, who stated that they were placed in a secret cave as an offering by a monk.
Normally the number of chanting beads in such a string is 108; however, this set consists of 116 beads, of which three hang down at the end. The beads are bright blue and end with a red and green decorative tassel. |
