Mogao Cave 17: Maitreya Buddha

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 64 x 33 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
Although a large portion of this Mid-Tang period (756-846) painting is missing, the figure of Maitreya Buddha is still almost completely intact. Maitreya sits with the legs resting on a Sumeru throne beneath a circular canopy. The Buddha has blue hair, partially closed eyes, and a thin beard. A red monastic robe with delicately shaded folds is draped over the left shoulder. The right hand is held up, forming a mudra. There is a red outline around the nimbus.
