Mogao Caves: Seated Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui dynasty (581–618); Clay; H: 33 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia |
| This sculpture was originally located in the Mogao Caves. The Bodhisattva’s high topknot is bound with blue ribbons that fall to the shoulders. The head leans forward to one side and is surrounded by a nimbus. The Bodhisattva wears a blue robe and is seated with one knee cupped in the hands. The unadorned arched screen behind the relief suggests that the work was incomplete. |
