Mogao Cave 55: Heavenly King
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Song dynasty (960–1279); Clay |
| Located to the left of the seated Maitreya Buddha on the back (west) wall, this Heavenly King stands tall and vigilant upon a rock pedestal. He is clad in ornate armor, and wears a helmet with ear protectors that curve upwards. The king’s eyes are wide and his brows are furrowed. His lips curl down while his mustache curves upwards. The damaged hands, placed in front of the abdomen, may have once held a sword. |
