Yangsan: Bodhisattva in Contemplation
SOUTH KOREA, South Gyeongsang, Yangsan; Silla dynasty (57 BCE–935 CE); Gilt bronze; H: 27.5 cm; National Museum of Korea, Seoul, South Korea |
| The slim figure wears a flower-patterned crown and sits in the contemplative posture while leaning forward with the cheek supported on a finger of the right hand. The right ankle rests on the left knee and the right elbow is supported on the bent leg, while the overhanging left foot rests on a lotus growing out from the base. The statue is quite plain and more simple than most 7th century Bodhisattvas in contemplation. |
