Palcho Monastery Kumbum Stupa: Rahula

CHINA, Tibet, Gyantse; 14th–17th century; Clay; H: 110 cm
Rahula, Sakyamuni Buddha's son, is depicted as a shaven-headed monastic sitting in the relaxation posture upon a rock. He holds a five-leaf crown, studded with gems. His forehead is broad and high and his long face gazes downward with a smile. The green and red monastic robe falls in undulating folds about the legs, giving a soft touch to the image.
