Mogao Cave 17: Dhrtarastra

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 40.5 x 15.5 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
Found in Mogao Cave 17, this 9th century banner depicts the Heavenly King of the East, Dhrtarastra. The Heavenly King has a pointed nose, a mustache, and a beard. He wears layered armor decorated with yellow scales, a beast's head, and red trim. The left hand holds a bow and the right hand grasps an arrow. Dhrtarastra's feet are supported by a snaggle-toothed demon who looks up out of one open eye. Flowers in panels decorate the bottom of the banner.
