Longxing Temple: Buddha Triad

Unearthed from the Longxing Temple site in 1996, this triad depicts a Buddha and two Bodhisattvas, with lotus nimbuses, who are standing upon double lotus pedestals. The mandorla that encloses them is petal-shaped. Despite wear and damage, it is plain that they lack the delicate facial details often seen in the artworks of the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534). Instead, the heads are disproportionately small and the detail of the garments is simplified, though accurate.
The inscription found at the back states that the work was commissioned by Jia Shuzi in memory of her late husband, with the prayer that she be liberated from female rebirth in the future. |
