Fragment of a Bodhisattva

| This well-preserved fragment from Gandhara is a representation of a Bodhisattva. A large, plain nimbus encircles the head. The figure wears an elaborate, partially damaged turban, which is decorated with lions and makara. The Bodhisattva has an urna between the eyebrows, large downcast eyes, prominent nose, long curly mustache, and a square chin. The earlobes are elongated and decorated with ornate lion-headed earrings that hang down to the broad shoulders. The upper body is decorated with necklaces, a sacred thread, and a trefoil armlet. A robe covers the left shoulder. |
