Rinzai Zen Temple: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

TAIWAN, Taipei; Dated 1929; Stone; H: 120 cm
The statue is located halfway up the mountain behind the temple's Great Hero Hall. The base on which the figure rests is actually a gravestone. An inscription names the statue as Avalokitesvara and states that it was placed there in 1929 to commemorate the third anniversary of the person's death.
The Bodhisattva is seated in the posture of royal ease on a large lotus flower supported on an inverted lotus base. The right elbow rests on the raised knee, with one hand supporting the chin as if in contemplation. There is a mixture of styles here, mainly taking their inspiration from the Water-Moon Avalokitesvara and Cintamanicakra Avalokitesvara.
