Enryakuji Temple: Sutra Box

JAPAN, Shiga, Otsu; Heian period (794–1185); Wood; H: 17 cm
This black lacquered sutra box features a maki-e design of flowers in gold and silver. It was listed as a National Treasure in 1957.
The sutra box is 33 cm long, 20 cm wide, and 17 cm high. The lid and four sides have designs consisting of circles with a four-petal lotus in the center surrounded by flowers in a symmetrical pattern. This fine and delicate design is an excellent example of the application of maki-e technique on lacquered wood during the 11th century.
