Apeyadana Temple: Sarasvati and Mahesvara
MYANMAR, Mandalay, Bagan; Late 11th century |
| These images of Sarasvati and Mahesvara, Hindu deities adapted into Buddhism as Dharma protectors, are painted on the outer wall of the corridor of Apeyadana Temple. Sarasvati, wearing a cone-shaped jeweled crown encircled by a white nimbus, rides a white swan. A maid holding a lotus flower stands behind the swan. Mahesvara rides a bull, has a tall topknot, and wears bracelets and armlets. Both hands are held high, grasping a trident and jewels. A snake rests on the left shoulder and wraps around the white torso. The bull has white horns and lively eyes. A circle decorated with foliate patterns frames each of the images. |
