Mogao Cave 17: Seven Treasures of the Cakravartin
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 62.5 x 20 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom |
| This 9th century banner was found in Mogao Cave 17. The seven treasures are arranged within a landscape and painted beside blank cartouches. The treasures, from top to bottom, are a Dharma wheel, a jewel, a coffer, a general, a queen, an elephant, and a horse. The seven treasures are a common theme in Buddhist paintings, although the arrangement here is unique. In other similar works, the coffer is sometimes replaced by an image of a minister. |
