Maijishan Grotto 159: Cross-Ankled Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Clay
The sculpture, located in the middle tier on the left side of the back wall, portrays a seated cross-ankled Bodhisattva, with a mustache and an elaborate topknot. The Bodhisattva raises the right hand, while the left hand’s index finger points down. On either side of the Bodhisattva stand two attendant Bodhisattvas. Their adornments and facial features are similar to that of the central Bodhisattva. In between the figures are dark green lotus pads and flowers.
