This reliquary was recovered from the heavenly palace of Chaoyang North Pagoda in 1988. The container is made of cornelian and the cover is made of gold. It has a diameter of 4.2 cm at its widest point and measures 4.5 cm high. The cover has a small ring in the center to which a set of chains are connected in order to seal the container.
With a flat base, curved body, and prominent rim, this fine example of a cornelian reliquary is reddish brown with a swirling cloud-like pattern. Previously used to store milky-white relics, which were the size of a grain of rice, it was restored in 1992. |
