Qingshan Temple Pagoda: Heavenly Kings
CHINA, Shaanxi, Xi'an; Tang dynasty (618–907); Line incision on stone; 80 x 34 cm; Lintong Museum, Xi'an, Shaanxi, China |
| These small stone doors were discovered in the underground palace of the Qingshan Temple Pagoda in 1985. The carved images of the Heavenly Kings stand opposite each other, one holding a spear and the other carrying a sword. They are dressed in helmets, armor, and battle boots. The crown-shaped canopies above their nimbuses are decorated with tassels and ribbons. At the top of each door, there is an elegant apsara scattering fresh flowers among flowing clouds. |
