Ascetic
CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); Copper alloy; H: 16.5 cm; Palace Museum, Beijing, China |
| The ascetic is seated upon a round straw mat in the royal ease posture, with the right leg horizontal and the left leg positioned to support the hands. The ascetic's hair and beard are curly and the forehead is wrinkled, but the face is serene. The emaciated body curves forward, clad in a robe that exposes the protruding rib cage and spinal vertebrae. The figure has an urna, a swelling usnisa, and elongated earlobes. |
