Jingdezhen: Statuette of Bodhidharma

CHINA, Jiangxi, Jingdezhen; Dated 1993; By Li Gongkun; Porcelain; H: 21 cm; Jingdezhen Sculpture Ceramics Factory, Jiangxi, China
Bodhidharma is portrayed with a high forehead, long eyebrows, deep eyes, bulbous nose, curly beard and mustache, and long earlobes with large earrings. His bare upper body is muscular and his lower body is covered by a simple garment. He sits on the back of an ox and stares into the far distance with determination. The ox lowers its head but still appears powerful.
Made in Jingdezhen, the figure of Bodhidharma is dark brown with details in black and gold. In contrast, the ox and blanket are entirely glazed in black. The whole scene is one of movement and dynamism.
